Biodiverskripsi seeks to increase the accessibility of local biodiversity research in Indonesia by collating ecological monitoring data inherent in student theses in a sustainable platform to ease its use in a larger scope of research. We expect this initiative to fill the knowledge gap regarding Indonesian ecological data, to assist more advanced and impactful researches such as designing a conservation area or modelling the effect of climate change on biodiversity, and further improve scientific practices in Indonesian universities.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,330 records. 2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Project Data

Student theses provide a vast untapped source of information in biodiversity, especially in Indonesia where biodiversity assessment was a popular topic for most undergraduate theses. Biodiverskripsi aims to collect biodiversity data from these unpublished student theses all over Indonesia coming from the time period of 2000-2017 to detect how researches conducted by students for their theses in Indonesia fill the knowledge gap in biodiversity set. We collected data from groups of organisms that are commonly sampled in an event for research in student theses: Embryophytes, Freshwater Invertebrates, Terrestrial Invertebrates, Vertebrates, and Marine Biota. Our volunteers have bachelor degree at minimum in field related to biodiversity and understand biodiversity data to enable biodiversity data transcription according to Darwin Core framework.

Study Area Description We collated biodiversity data from student theses from three partner universities: Universitas Sumatera Utara, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Universitas Papua. Additional content providers came from Universitas Indonesia and Institut Pertanian Bogor who independently contribute data while doing their research in those universities.
Design Description We transcribed biodiversity data from student theses that studied biodiversity in their natural habitat so that they provide species occurrences data. Studies that are literature review or ex situ observations were not included. The biodiversity data were transcribed to sampling-event data as a core, connected to occurrence data, measurement data, and literature data as extension. Following the data quality requirement of sampling-event data, we only transcribe theses which had standardized sampling protocol and clear taxonomic information of the studied species. As the volunteers were not involved in the study itself, they provided the circumstances of transcription in each sampling-event data to ease data use. However, we suggest data user to communicate with the thesis’s supervisors provided in the literature extension for questions about specific data.

Sampling Methods

We transcribed theses that were resulted from biodiversity research that were submitted to their university on the period of 2000-2017 from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Papua, Universitas Indonesia, and Institut Pertanian Bogor.

Study Extent Data came from various biodiversity assessment studies that were conducted in various ecosystems all over Indonesia.

Method step description:

  1. The volunteers selected potential theses titles from the library catalogue, examine the theses to get data required for sampling-event data, transcribe the resulting information to Darwin Core fields for sampling-event data. The examination procedure ensured that the theses include enough information on the sampling protocol to reproduce the study and that the taxonomic information of the species sampled were clear. Studies that obtain species occurrence data from ex situ observation (zoo, captive breeding, introduced species, etc.) and literature were omitted. Information about the theses were provided in the literature extension.

Purpose The data aimed to evaluate research practices in Indonesian universities, particularly the ones related to biodiversity. We seek to understand how undergraduate student theses contribute to Indonesia's biodiversity data and help biodiversity conservation and research.
